Lake Titicaca
Lake Titicaca is located on the border of Bolivia and Peru. its sits and about 12,500 feet above sea level. This is one of the highest lakes in the world. By volume of water it is the largest lake in South America. In the middle of the lake lies the Straight of Tiquina. At its smallest point the straight is 2,620 feet across (Wikipedia.com). The lake is fed by annual rainfall and the melting of glaciers each year. The waters of the lake are cold and there are usually big waves.

There are 5 islands that are scattered around the lake. people live on some of these islands. The island Suriqui is in the Bolivian part of the lake. It is thought to be the only place where reed boat making is still around. Lake Titicaca is a sacred place for the Incans. They believe this is where their first king Manco Capac was born. They say he walked out of the lake and created the sun and the stars (Lake Titicaca.org).

The largest of the island in Lake Titicaca is the Isla del Sol. The islands terrain is very rough and hilly. There are no paved roads so there or usually no vehicles. There approximately 800 families that live on the island. They farm land and fish for a living. There are about 180 Incan ruins around the island.

Another heavily populated Island is Amantani. It is also populated by about 800 families. The people of the island speak quechua. There are two mountain peaks on the island called Pachatata or Father earth and Pachamama or mother Earth. The hills of these mountain are terraced and growing on the are wheat, potatoes, and vegetables( Absolute Astronomy.com). There are hotels or cars but there is a small school and a few stores that sell goods. There used to be electricity but there is not any more.
